A culmination of events has led to Feed Adam. After witnessing both physical and spiritual poverty firsthand while volunteering in Ecuador and Moldova over the past few years, Feed Adam founder Curtis Bomgaars realized things could be done better. Simply feeding the poor was not enough, because tomorrow they would again be hungry. While holistic development agencies already existed, it seemed like an overwhelming amount of time and energy had to go into raising financial support, rather than investing in the very lives of the individuals they were trying to help. On the other hand, as a volunteer he knew that not everyone had the freedom to donate as much of their time or money as they would like in supporting these causes. Then, one afternoon, while shopping at a supermarket in Quito, Ecuador, it dawned on him. There, before his eyes stood a solution to so many of these pressing issues, quinoa. Our quinoa comes from an indigenous Ecuadorian women's foundation, Randimpak (Quechua for "lend a hand"), that works to empower women in rural communities across Ecuador. The women receive technical and logistical support in marketing their products, as well as a $.25 premium for their quinoa, health care, and further education. At the beginning of the project, only 4 out of every 10 members' children were shown to be of normal weight. That number is now 8. We donate $1/lb sold between New Vision Renewable Energy and Hope International, who work to empower and transform the lives of individuals living in poverty. New Vision generally works with low-income families here in the U.S. helping them fund, assemble, and install renewable energy systems in their homes. The families, in turn, pay them back with the money they save each month in utilities. They also have a number of missions abroad. Hope International provides micro-finance services and business and savings training for very small time entrepreneurs in over 16 countries around the world. see details
